Day 7: Mayan Heartland (Oct. 2011)

Having journeys some 10 hours in the crystal caves of Belize the day before, we awoke to the calming sounds of tropical birds and beautiful sunny skies today and then packed up our ‘Gypcy Caravan’ and headed back into the Peten District of Guatemala on our way to El Remate .

Today was our day of reprise and reflection after earning our rights of passage from the Mayan Underworld of Xibalba,  and that’s exactly what we set out to to . Originally we had plans to visit the Mayan Pyramids of, Xu-Nan-Tu-Nich (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xunantunich), but the Mopan River was very high and stronger then usual from the heavy waters of the rainy season, so the fairy bridge was closed.  We took this as a serendipitous sign that today was our day for playing.

After breakfast at Midas Resort (www.midasbelize.com) we took some time to interview Edward, the owner of Hun Chi’ik Tours, and find out what he thought about 2012. Edward grew up in a mixed Mayan-Spanish background and as a little boy he would sit and listen to the ‘Abuelos’ or grandparents about mythological stories of Aluxes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alux), Mayan Gods, and a myriad of stories that were passed down through oral tradition. We spent most of the day laughing our way from San Ignacio to El Remate and then catching the brilliant sunset colors that reflected off the waters of magical Lake Peten Itza.  Setting the back drop at the swimming docks is a mountain range called by the locals ‘El Cahuillo’, which means Crocodile, as it makes the silhouette of a crocodile during sunset time. How nice it was to swim and laugh with the local ids and fellow Buffalo Tribe.

One of the highlights of the day was when Reyna Ambrose situated her crystal quartz into her slingshot and then hurled it into the lake like an Ancient Warrior Princess. Watching her intention filled crystal fly through the air into the Crimson Red and Fiery Orange Sunset was like watching time stand still, and for a moment it was if we could hear the Ancient Mayan Wizards recieving the offering with reverence and gratitude. What’s even more synchronistic about this act of hurling a crystal quartz into the lake with loving intention, is that the entire area of Tikal Temples and the greater Peten Region is essentially one massive body of Quartz crystal, which is a natural conductor of energy and information!
